Travel – Bad Kleinkirchheim

Welcome to a wonderful place in Carinthia

For some years now, we’ve called Bad Kleinkirchheim our second home, and in that time, we’ve stumbled upon a handful of cherished spots – from secluded hiking trails to cozy restaurants – that we’re excited to share with you here. Join us as we peel back the layers of this charming town, revealing its hidden gems and favourite haunts. Whether you’re seeking a charming mountain view or a mouthwatering meal, let us be your guides to the best of what Bad Kleinkirchheim has to offer.

To ensure easier navigation, we categorize our articles into winter and summer seasons, as they differ significantly in experiences.

During winter, the mountain lifts and meticulously groomed slopes create a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts of all kinds, whether it be skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski touring, or snowshoe hiking.

In the summer, the mountains offer wonderful hiking trails, and the nearby lakes provide opportunities to bask in the strong mountain sun and potentially get a sunburn.

Winter Time

Generel Information

Discover the enchanting winter wonderland of Bad Kleinkirchheim, boasting 35 pristine slopes, 24 lifts, and seamless access to St. Oswald. Nestled amidst breathtaking alpine scenery, the ski resort promises an unforgettable experience.

The shuttle takes you directly to the slopes, which is free of charge. However, please note that towards the end of the season (and sometimes even earlier), the closure of the Sonnwiesenabfahrt descent (due to too little snow on the slopes) and the aging Sonnwiesenbahn 1 and Sonnwiesenbahn 2 may interrupt the connection between St. Oswald and Bad Kleinkirchheim.

Despite this, St. Oswald’s ski area captivates with its unparalleled beauty. Our personal favourites lifts are Wiesennockbahn and Schartenbahn.

Stay informed with real-time updates on open slopes provided by the mountain railways. Remember to check early in the morning as adverse weather conditions may occasionally necessitate lift closures.

If the weather isn’t cooperating, there are two thermal baths where you can relax.
Römerbad Thermal Spa
St. Cathrin Thermal Spa
Besides sauna and spa amenities, the thermal swimming pools also feature outdoor areas, providing a delightful experience during winter. There’s something truly magical about soaking in warm water while the temperatures dip below freezing outside.
St. Cathrin Thermal Spa boasts a large swimming pool perfect for proper swimming workouts. However, it’s worth noting that during inclement weather, both spas tend to fill up rather quickly. So, if you’re planning a visit, it’s advisable to arrive sooner rather than later to secure your spot.“

The town also offers several shops, the town is divided into two sections: one around the Römerbad Thermal Spa and the other around the St. Cathrin Thermal Spa. You can find cool, small shops around each area and a walk though the town will cost you only around 30 – 40 minutes.

Two supermarkets, which even open on weekends during the season, are available for self-catering needs. Additionally, there’s a farm shop (Mallhof – Die Biobauern) that sells local products through two vending machines outside of regular hours. Adjacent to the vending machines, there’s a small enclosure housing three goats who eagerly gaze at passersby.

If you’re feeling a bit more active, consider taking a hike around the village. There’s a scenic trail that loops around, offering beautiful views of the valley below. It’s definitely worth it if you have a few hours to spare.

alternative ski area, near by

In case of bad weather conditions or if the slopes are closed, we highly recommend taking a short 20-minute drive to Turracher Höhe by car. The ski area there offers superior conditions with well-groomed slopes that last significantly longer. Additionally, you’ll find a delightful service known as the ‚Pisten Butler,‘ who cruises around the ski area on a snowmobile, appearing at various spots to serve complimentary champagne. However, as parking spaces are limited, we advise arriving by 8:30 AM to secure a spot. For electric car drivers, there are public parking facilities available near the ‚Kornockbahn‘ for your convenience.

St. Oswald – Oswald PLATZ’L

For convenience, we often park at St. Oswald and indulge in the warm hospitality of „Oswald PLATZ’L“ at the base station of the Biosphäreparkbahn Brunnach. Christa and her team ensure a really good dining experience, with their signature Spareribs drawing crowds to bask in the sunshine.
After a day of thrilling adventures on the slopes, there’s no better way to wind down than by settling in for a cozy evening here. With the convenience of our location, you can extend your evening with a few drinks before hopping onto the ski bus directly back to the hotel. It’s the perfect way to end your day of excitement and relaxation.

Aperol Spritz

St. Oswald – eve alps – Panorama Hütte

For an exclusive culinary journey, venture to „eve alps – Panorama Hütte,“ nestled discreetly at Priedrölift and Panoramalift. Julia and Matthias curate an exceptional menu, tantalizing taste buds with each dish. By special request, the hut even offers accommodation options. Among our favourites are the hearty „zerfetzte Sau“ and the delicate „Topfenreinkalan“, but it’s the homemade „Germknödel“ that steal the show every time.

On sunny days, the quaint rooftop terrace offers a perfect spot to soak in the warmth while enjoying your meal. However, even when the weather takes a turn, fret not, for the lodge is impeccably equipped to cater to all conditions. Step into the cozy winter garden extension, where a warm and inviting ambiance awaits, accompanied by a selection of truly exclusive dishes.

And here’s a tip: don’t leave without inquiring about the famous sticker, you might have spotted adorning the helmets of some locals.

Bad Kleinkirchheim – Die Groar Alm

For a truly cozy dining experience, look no further than the „Groar Alm“. This charming spot is only open during the winter season, so be sure to make reservations in advance, as hotel guests are given priority. However, if you manage to secure a spot, you’ll find yourself nestled in a rustic cabin, ready to indulge in some fantastic food.

One of the highlights of our visit was trying out the „heißer Hut“, a unique dining experience where you can grill your own meat and vegetables right at your table. The atmosphere is delightful, and thanks to its elevated location, the stroll back home is equally enjoyable.

To make a reservation you have to call the Kirchheimerhof!

Die Groar Alm

Turracher Höhe – Sonnalm

Sonnalm. Tucked away near the Sonnbahn, this alpine haven is perfectly positioned for a leisurely lunch bathed in sunlight.

At Sonnalm, hospitality isn’t just a word—it’s a way of life. The staff exude warmth, ensuring every visitor feels like a welcomed guest. And when it comes to dining, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. The menu boasts a variety of delectable dishes and refreshing beverages, all served with impressive efficiency.

For a quick indulgence between runs, don’t miss the heavenly combination of pommes frites with truffle sauce—a tantalizing snack that hits all the right notes.

After refueling, it’s back to the slopes. Whether you opt for a ride on the „Pisten Taxi“ across the frozen lake or ascend once more via the 2-seater chairlift, the adventure continues, promising exhilarating moments and breathtaking views at every turn.

Summer Time

General Information

During the summer, this place and the surrounding mountains offer a plethora of possibilities for an unforgettable experience. With an elevation of 1,087 meters, the evenings can get quite chilly, so it’s advisable to have a vest or sweater handy when venturing out. The cool temperature eliminates the need for air conditioning, allowing for a relaxing night’s sleep with the window wide open.

In addition to the two thermal baths, which are open year-round, there are enchanting hiking trails leading to various peaks nearby. For the more adventurous souls, there’s a downhill track accessible via the Kaiserburgbahn, providing an exhilarating descent after reaching the mountain’s summit.

If you’re feeling particularly motivated, consider an early morning adventure to the Falkertsee followed by a hike up Falkert Peak. Arriving at the summit just as the sun begins to rise promises a breathtaking view that’s nothing short of magical. Whether you’re visiting in the summer or winter, this excursion is accessible year-round, with snowshoes making the snowy trails just as enjoyable as the warmer months.

In the region, you’ll find a lot of well-marked hiking trails awaiting your exploration. For detailed guidance, visit the tourist information center where you can pick up hiking maps. Additionally, consider the convenience of the Kärnten Card which offers discounts on various attractions nearby. Particularly advantageous for frequent mountain rail travelers, this card quickly pays off. However, do note that only one journey is included per day. Therefore, if you’ve ascended to St. Oswald, you won’t be able to utilize your free ride in Bad Kirchheim thereafter. Plan your journeys wisely!
The Kärnten Card offers you much more actives, like boat trips and museum access.

We’ll be expanding this section of the article over the coming weeks and months, adding more information and insights. Stay tuned for updates.

Bad Kleinkirchheim – Fuxbau

Located near the Kaiserburgbahn, right in the heart of town, is the Hotel Sportalm. For the past few years, it’s been home to its own restaurant called „Fuxbau,“ open to both guests and visitors alike, offering à la carte dinners. The dynamic duo behind the scenes, Jessica and Kevin, are hands-on, ensuring a delightful experience for guests throughout the evening. It’s advisable to call ahead and secure a table, especially during peak seasons when spots tend to fill up fast. Enjoy a leisurely aperitif at the bar or, weather permitting, relax on the terrace with a view towards the Maibrunnbahn.

The Swedish influence permeates both the hotel and restaurant, with hospitality reigning supreme. Dinner presents a select yet ever-evolving menu, promising a culinary journey curated by the chef, leaving patrons thoroughly impressed. And if nothing on the menu strikes your fancy, feel free to express your preferences; they’ll ensure your desires are met, even accommodating requests for an evening eggs dish.

For those still up for some entertainment after dinner, a billiards table is at your disposal.

Bad Kleinkirchheim – Adriana

If you’re craving a juicy steak or a delicious pizza, Adriana is the place to be. The pepper sauce with the steak is just perfect, and the atmosphere is extremely pleasant. A good glass of red wine is always available, and the wine menu is a real eye-catcher. The side dishes are great, and the spinach is a must-try. The only small downside is that due to the high number of guests (in high-season), there’s always a bit of a feeling that you should get up and leave as soon as you’re done eating. But you can get rid of this feeling by moving to the bar and enjoy your digestif there.
